Mrs. Phillips Recognized as a National Finalist
Congratulations to Mrs. Jen Phillips of the Mt. Elbert core for being named one of two Colorado finalists for the 2008 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science. Mrs. Phillips has demonstrated that she is an outstanding educator dedicated to providing her students with a rich mathematics program and to improving mathematics education here at Euclid as well as all of Littleton Public Schools. Each Colorado finalist is automatically a candidate for the national level. Good luck, Mrs. Phillips.

Drama Teacher Extraordinare
It was last May that Carla McWilliams heard the news the she had been nominated for the Colorado Middle Level Theatre Educator of the Year by the Alliance for Colorado Theatre. One of Carla’s colleagues sent in the actual nomination. Carla had a lot of work to do for the nomination, but it was well worth it. On June 23, to be exact, Carla found out that she had been given the award. September 19, will be the luncheon when Carla actually receives the award. Carla said that she was stunned to receive the nomination, and, “thrilled to be given the award! It makes my job a joy rather than a chore.” Carla felt and will continue to feel, “very privileged to work with students in a school in which the arts are so supported by the administration and the community.” Congratulations, Carla. This award is very much deserved.

6th Grade Field Trip to Roxborough State Park
On Wednesday, October 1, 6th grade students from the Mt. Columbia core joined students from the Mt. Elbert core to go on a field trip to Roxborough State Park. The purpose of this trip was to study up close and personally the plants and animals of a grassland biome. Students and teachers were treated to a beautiful autumn day and a 2 mile hike through the park led by knowledgeable eco-guides from Roxborough. Some students were lucky enough to be guided by Paul Bleau, a former Euclid teacher who is now a guide in the park. Students were able to experience the ecosystem in ways that will help them to remember and truly comprehend this unit of study in science.
Statements from students included: “This was the best field trip ever!”, and “I want my parents to take me there on the weekends!” The rest of the EMS 6th grade students will be taking this same trip during the month of October.
